The main differences between solar pv air conditioning and regular air conditioning

1、 Energy source

Solar air conditioning

The main energy source is solar energy. It converts solar energy into electrical or thermal energy through solar photovoltaic panels or solar collectors to drive the operation of the air conditioning system. For example, photovoltaic panels absorb sunlight and generate direct current, which can be directly used to drive components such as compressors in air conditioners (if it is a DC variable frequency air conditioner), or converted into alternating current through an inverter for use in air conditioners.

In the presence of sunlight, free solar energy resources can be fully utilized, greatly reducing dependence on traditional grid electricity.

Ordinary air conditioning

It operates entirely on mains power (grid supply). All the electrical energy required for its compressor, fan, and other components is provided by the household or building's power lines, usually AC power.

2、 Energy saving and environmental friendliness

Solar air conditioning

Due to the utilization of renewable solar energy, carbon emissions can be significantly reduced during operation. If the solar air conditioning system is designed reasonably and can fully utilize solar energy, its environmental friendliness is relatively high.

In the long run, using solar energy can reduce energy costs, especially in sunny areas, which can significantly save electricity expenses.

Ordinary air conditioning

Consuming traditional electricity, most of which comes from traditional energy sources such as thermal power generation, can generate significant greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide. And with the fluctuation of energy prices, the cost of use is mainly affected by electricity prices.

3、 System composition and cost

Solar air conditioning

In addition to the basic components of traditional air conditioners such as compressors, evaporators, condensers, throttling devices, etc., solar energy collection devices (such as photovoltaic panels or solar collectors), controllers (used to control the collection of solar energy and the operation of air conditioning systems), energy storage devices (such as batteries, used to store excess solar energy and ensure air conditioning operation even in the absence of sunlight), etc. are also required.

The initial investment cost is relatively high. The procurement and installation costs of solar photovoltaic panels, batteries, and related control systems have increased the overall cost. However, with the development of solar energy technology and the manifestation of economies of scale, costs are gradually decreasing.

Ordinary air conditioning

The system is relatively simple, mainly composed of indoor and outdoor units, and can operate by connecting to the power grid through power lines.

The initial purchase cost is relatively low, but if long-term energy consumption costs are considered, in the case of high energy prices, the total cost may gradually increase with the increase of usage time.

4、 Operational stability and efficiency

Solar air conditioning

The stability of operation is greatly affected by weather and lighting conditions. When the solar energy collection device cannot effectively collect solar energy on cloudy days or at night, if the capacity of the energy storage device is insufficient, the operating power of the air conditioner may be limited or even unable to operate normally.

Its efficiency is also related to the conversion efficiency of the solar energy collection device. For example, although the photoelectric conversion efficiency of solar photovoltaic panels is constantly improving, it is still affected by various factors such as temperature, light intensity, and photovoltaic panel quality.

Ordinary air conditioning

As long as the power supply of the grid is normal, it can operate stably without being directly affected by natural factors such as weather.

The operational efficiency mainly depends on the technical parameters of the air conditioner itself, such as energy efficiency ratio (EER or COP). The higher the EER, the less electricity is consumed under the same cooling or heating effect.
